History of Reflexology

Reflexology is believed to have originated in the East, particularly in India where it spread to China and Japan. More recently, 2500 BC, Egyptian papyrus scenes show practitioners treating the hands and feet of patients.

What is Reflexology

Reflexology is a holistic therapy. Its aim is

to promote optimal balance and harmony of mind, body and soul.

Reflex points are present in the feet (also the hands). These points represent every part of the body. The therapist stimulates the reflex points with therapeutic, firm pressure which activates the corresponding area in the body and so encourages self-healing. As well as balancing the physical body a treatment also affects emotions, mental and spiritual outlook.

Benefits of Reflexology

Reflexology works on the whole of the body through reflex points and many health conditions respond favourably. The therapist concentrates on more than just a problem area. The whole body receives a workout.

Here are listed just a few of conditions that respond well to reflexology:

  • Stress related disorder
  • Digestive problems
  • Hormonal disorder
  • Circulatory problems
  • Muscle and joint problems
  • Premenstrual syndrome
  • Conception difficulties

In addition a treatment is cleansing (de-toxifyng). It revitalises energy, increases creativity and productivity. It is excellent for maintenance of good health and brings about a feeling of wellbeing.

Reflexology is ideal for manipulation of areas that are too painful to be worked on directly, i.e. severe back pain.
