David Palmer introduced Anma in the USA in 1980s, where he began massaging the back, neck and shoulders of employees in Silicon Valley for 15 minutes. To make the massage more comfortable he designed a special mobile chair.
What is Chair Massage
This is an oil-free massage. It is given to a fully clothed person who is seated in a very comfortable, ergonomically designed chair. Kneading, stretching, rubbing, pressing, squeezing, percussion are movements used in this ancient art of massage. Over 170 acupressure points are worked on during a massage which help our internal energy (chi, prana or lifeforce) to flow smoothly, which leads to a healthier person who is happy, relaxed, energetic and free from stiffness and pain.
Massage at the workplace
Chair massage is ideal for the workplace.
An article in the Financial Times 1992 wrote that an Ontario company reported a 25% reduction in absenteeism and also work related injuries and compensation claims dropped by $200 000 after implementing a massage therapy program.
International Journal of Neuroscience 1998 wrote that studies confirmed that job stress and anxiety were reduced while alertness and performance were increased following chair massage therapy.
Treatment times vary from 15 to 45 minutes. Very little space is needed - preferable is a small meeting room but open plan is also possible, whilst other staff carry on normally with their duties. Employees return to work refreshed, relaxed and more able to concentrate, which leads to enhanced productivity.
