BHAVANA, PRANAYAMA & MEDITATION DAY

This unique event bundle includes a pranayama and meditation workshop, an asana workshop and a yoga philosophy workshop on meditation and Samadhi.

The morning begins with an introduction into four classic pranayama techniques supported with a handout. The workshop continues with guided instruction through the techniques outlined. There will be space for questions and answers.

The four techniques covered will be

  1. Samavritti (equal breath) with Padadhirasana
  2. Samaveta (both nostrils together)
  3. Anuloma viloma (alternate nostril breath)
  4. Nadi shoodhana (nerve cleansing breath)

HATHA YOGA

The purpose and benefits of Pranayama will be explained in detail using authentic Hatha yoga sources supported with western scientific evidence.

08:30-10:00

PRANAYAMA

Pranayama calms the mind and soothes the nervous system in preparation towards meditation, but before meditation is achieved the mind needs to be purified. This is practiced by Pratyahara, or sense control.

PRATYAHARA (Sense control)

The senses are continuously gathering information which leads the mind to jump from thought to thought. Pratyahara teaches us to react to stimulus with detachment, which is a vital step towards holding the mind steady.

DHARANA (Holding the mind steady)

Through sense control it becomes possible to hold the mind steady for prolonged periods, which is the practice of Dharana, and which leads to meditation. We will use Jangama Dharna to achieve this.

DHYANA (Meditation)

Through controlling the breath and the thoughts the mind and body become still and can slip effortlessly into meditation. When the meditator is no longer aware of a sense of self, then it is called meditation. For this we will use Prana Dhyana.

10:00-11:30

SMOOTH SATURDAY VINYASA

Is a relaxed class of flowing postures with a handpicked soundtrack to ease out the hips after meditation. The class will conclude with a guided relaxation centred around the third eye and sacral regions incorporating crystals specifically for these charkas.

12:00-14:30

DHARANA, DHYANA & SAMADHI

The afternoon commences with a presentation and discussion on the concepts of Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi as put forward in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. The Yoga Sutras essentially are yoga for the mind, as opposed to Hatha yoga for the body. The Yoga Sutras discusses and gives advice on how to control the fluctuations of the mind, to allow for meditation and enlightenment.
