HIP OPENERS
This workshop will demonstrate and enable safe and effective strategies for opening the hips. Understanding alignment is essential for safely unlocking the hips, and with careful instruction progress will be swift.
HIP OPENERS AND SAFE KNEES
keeping the knees safe when working on hip openers is essential as It is easy to cause lateral rotation (sideways movement) of the knee joint if correct alignment is not maintained. The Knee is designed to flex and extend only (forward and backward) and lateral rotation will eventually cause destabilisation of the knee joint. Keeping the calf and thigh squeezed tightly together, will ensure that the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone) rotate as a single unit. This action prevents the knee from twisting and encourages the head of femur to rotate in the acetabulum (hip socket)
WHY OPEN THE HIPS?
Opening the hips is a part of realigning posture, and enables the Pelvis to sit in neutral, which then involves many movements and muscle groups. This workshop will include Asana’s and stretches for,
- External rotators
- Internal rotators
- Quadriceps
- Hamstring’s
- QL’s
- Spine extensors
- Psoas
SUBTLE BODY
The role of the subtle body in hip opening is also addressed and includes Swadhi bandha and Mulha bandha
